OPENING CEREMONY OF THE CARGILL SENSORIAL HALL FOR MENTAL DISABILITY PEOPLE AT ESCOLA ROSELLA FOUNDATION

On March 23rd a group of volunteers from Cargill Cares in Spain went to Escola Rosella Foundation to celebrate the opening ceremony of the new Cargill Sensorial hall for mental disability people.

Escola Rosella, placed in Castellví de Rosanes town, near Martorell, is a non-profit-making organization which takes care of mental handicap people from all ages, with the purpose to improve their quality of life and also to be able to integrate in our community as normal.

Escola Rosella has as objective to give continuing acceptance and care to the mental disability people in the following areas: work and therapeutics activities, residence, sports with the purpose to improve their personal and social development, equal opportunities and respect for people rights.

They have different workshops : where learn how to make small products, a vegetable garden where learn activities related with maintenance and conservation of vegatables, learn how to make recyclable paper, workshop of bread-made imitation jewelry where people learn to make small jewelry pieces with dough.

One of the objectives of Cargill Cares in Spain was to build a stimulation hall where patients can stimulate all their senses. Sense stimulation is a tool used to improve the quality of life of people with disabilities. With this purpose, it resorts to strategies which use the more primary skills of human being: sensations , perception and sense integration. A multi-sensorial hall is full of lights, smells, sounds, colours, etc…

With multi-sensorial halls you cannot cure patients but you can make them to enjoy, improve their relation and cognitive skills and over all they fell much better.

The day was a fantastic day. The agenda for that day was to prepare a great afternoon snack where volunteers cooked cakes, sweets and biscuits. They shared all these delicious cakes with the patients of the Escola Rosella. Afterwards the Cargill Stimulation Hall was inaugurated with the attendance of the Escola Rosella management as well as Cargill management. A Cargill Cares volunteer uncovered a commemorative plaque of the event. It was a very emotional moment as they read a poem of a local poetry talking about helping communities. After the opening event everybody was invited to visit the Cargill Hall and how it works. Later they showed us all the facilities of the center included the large vegetable garden they have in the surroundings. We finished with a very amazing and big party dancing the Cargill volunteers with the patients until late afternoon sharing with them a lovely time.

The funds to build the Cargill Stimulation Hall were € 5,000 collected in our last 2010 Cargill Cares Walking Hike.
