Chemical industry

The chemical industry covers a wide range of products and specialties, many of which include starch derivatives as basic ingredients as well as interim process products. Continuous research into the chemistry of carbohydrates is even increasing the application of these products, presenting a wide range of possibilities.

Biotechnology, for example, uses starches, dextrines and starch hydrolysates as sources of carbon in fermentation processes for the production of substances such as: antibiotics, aminoacids, organic acids, vitamins, enzymes and hydrocoloids.

The purity of the starch and its derivatives benefit the purification stages of the finished product and reduce the load of effluents. Nitrogen is obtained from the maceration water and corn gluten.

Modified and hydrolised starches are also basic elements in obtaining formaldehyde polymers by condensation and in flexible and rigid polyurethane foams. Sorbitol is used in the synthesis of resines, polyesters and in manufacturing polyoles-polyesters for producing polyurethanes, as well as in emulsifiers.
